mono pump

Progressive cavity pumps are also known as progressing cavity pumps, PC pumps or PCP pumps. Some people usually choose oversized pumps to overcome unknown variables which invariably leads to more expensive equipment, parts, servicing and running costs.

It’s a little complex to select the right progressive cavity pump model. Many users may have similar questions before they select the right model for their pumping applications. Should I choose the NETZSCH PC pump, MONO pump or SEEPEX pump? Which pump model should I select for my application? No one model fits all applications among single progressive cavity pumps!

Let’s not say which brand of single cavity pump should be selected. The fact is that there are many series with different models and stages even in the same progressive cavity pump brand. How should you choose a suitable model of progressive cavity pumps for your specific pumping applications? Don’t worry, a pump manufacturer or distributor can help you choose the correct one, but it is still important for you to understand how this selection is made. In this post, we will share what you should consider before a model was selected.

First of all, you should understand “What I’m trying to do with my pump?”

Before you buy the PC pump, it’s necessary to get the following 10 points ready for your pump manufacturer or distributor.

  • What is the material to be pumped? Type, viscosity or dry solids?

When viscosity increases, the pump slip will decrease, the maximum allowable speed decrease and the maximum allowable pressure per stator/rotor stage increases.

  • Are Any solid particles contained? What are the largest particle size and solid concentrations?

Because soft solids (abrasive) reduce the maximum allowable pump speeds. Pumps must have sufficient cavity size to pass the largest hard particle in the material. Except for the solid particle size, it’s better to know the concentration of the solids. Mixed liquids and microscopic solids usually produce a non-Neutonian liquid; Many products exhibit their viscosity characteristics by virtue of the high volumetric content of finely divided solids in suspension, e.g., toothpaste, paper-coating mixes, etc. Higher solids in suspension content decrease the maximum allowable speed and pressure per stage.

  • What is the material’s maximum temperature?

Higher temperatures affect the choice of elastomeric materials for the pump stator. And higher temperatures require the use of undersized rotors.

  • What’s the pressure?

Increasing differential pressure increases pump slip; Higher Pressures require additional stator/rotor stages; Higher pressures and slip have an accelerating effect on the rate of abrasive wear.

  • What is the pH level?

A pH of 0-7 is acid, pH of 7 is neutral, and 7-14 is alkaline. The pH value (hydrogenation activity) of the material should be known in order to select suitable materials of construction in the pump.

  • What is the desired flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM)?
  • What are the suction conditions and the discharge conditions?
  • What is the pipework like?

It refers to the lengths before and after the pump, diameters, bends, etc.

  • How many hours will the pump run per day?
  • What’s the abrasion of the material?

The abrasion of the material is based on the careful judgment of the abrasive nature of the solids in the material. The following broad classifications fyi:

• None – Example: Clear Water, fuel oil, gasoline, etc.

• Light – Example: Dirty Water containing sand, soil, or silt, etc.

• Medium – Example: Clay slurries, Gypsum slurries, etc.

• Heavy – Example: Heavy Slurries, Lapping Compounds, etc.

The more abrasive the product is, the lower the pump must operate. The amount of wear on an abrasive application is closely proportional to the speed squared.

The specific selection of a single progressive cavity pump should follow the principles of economy, rationality and reliability. If the model selection is not well considered, it will bring trouble to future use, management and maintenance. Therefore, selecting a reasonable and reliable PC pump according to the actual production needs can not only ensure smooth production but also reduce the later management and maintenance costs. For example, it can reduce the frequency and quantity of your repair and replacement of general accessories.
