What Is CNC Machining?
CNC refers to computer numerical control. CNC machining is a type of manufacturing process that is numerically controlled by computer software. It uses automated, high-speed cutting tools to create designs from metal or plastic raw materials.
Compared to conventional manual machining, the CNC machining process helps the machinists to make OEM machined parts more quickly, accurately and precisely. They can carry out more complex geometries with CNC machines. Normally, the standard CNC machines include 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis type machines. They are CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, CNC machining centers, etc.
These machines work in different ways to create a designed part. As to CNC turning by CNC lathes, the workpiece is rotated at speed in a chuck but the cutting tool does not spin. For CNC milling machines, the workpiece remains stationary, and the tools rotate to produce the custom part. Regarding more advanced CNC machines, the workpiece and tools can move together to complete more complicated parts in high efficient way.

CNC machining is subtractive processing. It runs with a computer, on which engineers created and designed a CAD (Computer-aided Design) model of the required part. The engineer then exports the CAD model into a compatible file format and converts it into machine instructions with CAM software.
Instructions are sent to the CNC machine in“G-Code” form. After that, the machine operator prepares the machine include tools and workpieces accordingly. Once everything is in order, the machine operator starts the machining manufacturing.
Tips: CNC machines have a worktable, It holds a device to fix the workpiece. This worktable may move or not move, which depends on the machine type.
When the CNC machine runs, the cutting tool contacts the workpiece, removing some raw material. The tool and workpiece work according to the G-Code instructions. In this way, the machining is achieved in exactly the right places to create a required CNC machining part.
CNC machining offers higher precision, accuracy, and production rates. There are usually four distinct steps in the CNC machining process:
- Design a CAD model: engineers create and design a 2D or 3D model of the required part.
- Convert the CAD model to a CNC program: export the design into a compatible file format and convert it into machine instructions with CAM software.
- Setup the CNC milling machine: the machine operator prepares the machine and workpiece accordingly.
- Execute the milling operation: the machine operator starts the machining program.
